Nadharia City Stars is a queer-led football team that has been thriving for over five years, using sport as a platform to challenge norms, promote visibility, and respond to the needs of the queer community. The team has grown into a strong community institution, fostering teamwork, discipline, and leadership while creating a sense of belonging and pride.
Through the Ujamaa model, Nadharia City Stars operates monthly chamas that are fully run by the players themselves. These collective savings support players’ welfare, emergencies, and team activities, strengthening financial solidarity and self-reliance. The team is working towards joining the national league, marking a significant step in transforming mainstream sports spaces to be more inclusive.
Nadharia City Stars has successfully organized and participated in football tournaments both within Nairobi and beyond, using sport to celebrate diversity and advocate for equality. The team has led community tournaments and events marking key moments such as IDAHOBIT in Western Kenya and the 16 Days of Activism in Nakuru, combining sport with awareness, solidarity, and social justice.
