ABOUT US

Who We Are

Nadharia is a queer -led, feminist, community-based organization working alongside sexual and gender minorities in Kenya to respond to violence, exclusion and inequality. We are led by the communities we serve and grounded in intersectional feminist values that center care, dignity and collective power. Our work brings together emergency response, mental health support, economic empowerment, creative advocacy and community wellbeing to address both immediate risk and long-term resilience. We believe that safety is a right, care is political and communities are strongest when they are resourced to lead their own futures.

Our Story

Nadharia was founded in response to the lived realities of sexual and gender minorities in Kenya realities shaped by homelessness, gender-based violence, economic marginalization and limited access to safe and affirming support systems. Too often, people are forced to navigate crisis without protection, care or opportunity. We emerged from community organizing and feminist practice, with a clear understanding that survival alone is not enough. Our work was built to respond to crisis and to create pathways toward stability, healing and self-determination. Today, Nadharia continues to grow as a trusted, grassroots organization rooted in community accountability, creativity and care.

Our Approach

Nadharia’s work is guided by an intersectional feminist approach that recognizes how systems of oppression such as gender, sexuality, class and violence intersect in people’s lives. We prioritize:

  • Community-led solutions

  • Trauma-informed and healing-centered care

  • Safety without surveillance or harm

  • Creativity as a pathway to resilience and expression

  • Accountability to the communities we serve

We work collaboratively with partners, allies and donors who share our commitment to justice, dignity and collective wellbeing.

Why Nadharia Matters

In a context where sexual and gender minorities continue to face heightened risk, shrinking civic space and limited access to affirming services, Nadharia plays a critical role as a trusted first responder, care provider and community anchor. Our work saves lives, strengthens resilience and creates space for people not only to survive but to live, lead and thrive.

OUR MISSION

To shape systems of care and justice where sexual and gender minorities can live, lead and thrive in safety, dignity and wellbeing.

OUR VISION

A world where sexual and gender minorities in Kenya live freely, safely and with dignity supported by strong, community-led systems of care.

OUR CORE VALUES

  • Intersectional Feminism

  • Community-Led Care

  • Safety with Dignity

  • Healing-Centered Practice

  • Creativity as Resistance

  • Accountability & Integrity

We provide short-term emergency response and protection support for sexual and gender minorities facing immediate risk. Our approach prioritizes confidentiality, harm reduction and dignity, ensuring that people can access support without exposure or further harm. Through crisis response, referrals and safety planning, we act as a trusted first point of support in moments of urgent need.

We strengthen economic autonomy by supporting skills development and income-generating opportunities. By increasing access to livelihoods, we reduce vulnerability and support long-term stability for sexual and gender minorities facing systemic economic exclusion.
Our programs create pathways toward self-reliance, resilience and sustainable futures.

We use art, culture and storytelling as tools for healing, visibility and social change. Through platforms such as Tubonge Tukibonda and other creative initiatives, we challenge stigma, amplify community voices and build spaces for expression, dialogue, and resistance.
Creativity allows us to shift narratives while nurturing collective healing.

We create inclusive sports spaces that promote physical wellbeing, connection, and community belonging. Through football, basketball, and other activities, we support mental health, teamwork, and collective strength in affirming environments.
Sports serve as a powerful tool for resilience, joy, and community care.
